For many of those who spent large chunk of their working life in the ivory tower traversing the different gamut of teaching profession, be it Assistant Lecturer, Senior Lecturer , Reader, Associate Professor and then Professor, life outside the daily routine of teaching could be monotonous , devoid of the verve that propel them as professors . Therefore, for these category of professors any public office that has the trappings of money , leaving the ivory tower could actually mean the commencement of journey to greener pasture; the time to straddle the national platform, like a dinosaur afraid of going back to Egypt where honey and milk is in a short supply.
Professor Mahmood Yakubu, National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, belong to this clan that cannot be trusted in handling sensitive matters like conducting elections for the country. His dismal performance at the conduct of the Presidential and National Assembly elections has exposed the trust deficit which the first class graduate of history carries as emblem in all the elections that he has conducted since he took over from Professor Attahiru Jega.
In the buildup to the 2019 general elections which he, (Professor Yakubu)postponed by one week with the assurance that the reason behind the postponement was to get it right, he never got it right because he conducted election that had the trappings of fraud. Consistent with breached promises with impunity, in 2023 election, the professor of history again, at different fora told his audience that he was going to upload the results real time. Facts abound that the INEC National Chairman did not disappoint in showing to the general public that observing promises in breach is his stock in trade since he assumed office as the INEC boss. Professor Yakubu has joined the league of Nigerians whose conduct in public offices has contributed immensely to the bad name that the country bears as a corrupt nation.
Disturbing is the fact that the INEC boss behaves as if he is doing the masses a favour by repeatedly breaching his promises derived from the nation’s laws with impunity. His conduct especially in the manner of the collation of the February 25, 2023 election suggests that he is taking the masses for a dangerous ride, through his behaviour telling Nigerians that he does not owe them any obligation to explain the shenanigans called 2023 presidential election.
