During his Independence Day Speech of Tuesday, October 1, 2024, not many Nigerians expected President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to dish out a shooting oratory that could assuage the frustration in the land brought about by his economic policies. Whatever Tinubu would deliver to the nation at its 64th independence anniversary never mattered to most citizens.
True to his type, Tinubu delivered a speech that early morning, only exaggerating what is referred to as his meagre achievements in the past one year and four months.
Those who cared to spare precious minutes to hear from Tinubu were served a dish of more frustration and disappointment when, simultaneously with the speech, armed police and soldiers went about molesting hungry protesters who came out to protest the squeezing hunger in the land under the #FearlessinOctober Protest. Tinubu could not address the protesters, rather he loathed their mention in his infamous speech.
Indeed, the only opportunity the President of an ill-fated country as Nigeria, had the opportunity to empathize and embrace the youthful protesters, he chose to squander it on a frivolous Independence Day Speech. What a pity!
