Truth be told, there is still pervasive hunger in the land. What is most unthinkable is the fact that the government and managers of Nigeria’s economy seem carried away, being swayed by unrealistic figures of easing inflation from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
On the streets of Lagos and other cities across the country, the figures are not a true reflection of the economic realities tormenting poor citizens, which is why most Nigerians remain unapologetically critical of the inflation figures, which the NBS says has been sustained for the last five or six months of 2025.
The verdict: Either the Federal Government is pandering to the inflation rate or the NBS is being economical with the reality, because prices of food stuff and other essential items are still outside the reach of average Nigerians, which is why hunger persists in most households in spite of the positive numbers on paper. Somehow, there is a slight reduction in the prices of some staple food items, still the availability of the purchasing power to the citizens to buy these items remains elusive due to lack of jobs.

A review of the circumstances that led to the imposition of emergency rule on Rivers State on March 18, 2025 as well as the negotiations for restoration of peace and harmony in the state betrays a deliberate attempt to undermine democracy and hand the state’s resources and political structures to the powerful men at the state and national levels.
As a matter of fact, Governor Siminalayi Fubara may have been reinstated, but only as a castrated state helmsman, having pledged his undiluted loyalty to the ‘emperor’ of Rivers State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike and President Tinubu. That, in itself, speaks volumes as to what to expect from the Rivers State Governor before the 2027 general elections.
There are fears that the ultimate victims will remain credible democratic governance and the people of Rivers State, what with moves to woo Fubara to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which is very much likely to happen in the near future. As things stand, Nigerians are watching and only time will tell in the Rivers State case.
