With the recent military take-over of democratic governance in Guinea Bissau, a clear message has been sent to other Africa countries to the effect that when democracy fails, the khaki boys are ready to lead the way. It has happened in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger and as things stand, there is no guarantee whatsoever if it will not extend to Africa most populous country, Nigeria.
The warning signs stared the presidency in the eyes in October when some aggrieved middle-level officers allegedly plotted to oust President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. And so, with what has become Nigeria’s failing democracy to many, citizens have cautioned that with the escalating terrorism and banditry, exacerbated by incessant killings, abductions and sacking of communities across the country, Nigeria, like its African neighbours, may witness another military takeover, unless concrete and immediate steps are taken to redress the situation.
Of course, whether fact or fiction, an attempt was made recently in October to sack the incumbent Nigerian government, prompting a cancellation of the Independence Day celebration in Abuja, the seat of power on October 1, 2025.
If the supposed October coup attempt for which the administration hurriedly sacked top military officers and replaced them with new officers did not send jitters down the spine of the nation’s government and its officials to do the needful and arrest terrorism with all the urgency and seriousness it deserves, one does not know what else will.
And so, a serious government would not wait for threats from President Donald Trump to get its acts together as it concerns nipping terrorism and banditry in the bud, no matter the sacrifices. Rather, the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu government is more interested in chasing shadows by labeling leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, a terrorist and sentencing him to life imprisonment, which he has been condemned to serve in Sokoto.
But the government and its handlers, particularly the judiciary and the likes of Justice James Omotosho, should be reminded that no injustice lasts forever. As the government dissipates its energy on hounding innocent citizens, who demand self-determination, bandits run amok in the North, abducting school girls in their hundreds, killing innocent people and sacking whole communities, while the government ducks and passes the buck. Nigeria stands on the brink! The security situation in the country is worse than war!
The seeming emasculation of the government, which capitulates, while terrorist run the country with reckless abandon, imposing taxes and levies on communities, painfully form our lead story in what we titled Shaky-Shaky Democracy edition and we demand an immediate, foolproof exigency plans to arrest the escalating banditry in the country.
In case the government thinks the bandits (who recently slaughtered a Brigadier-General and even threatened to go for the president himself) are joking, it better have a rethink and do the needful by naming names, arresting those in and out of government who might be complicit in laying siege to the country and damn the consequences.
