In a country constantly embarrassed, harassed and shamed by some of the most vicious instances of kidnapping of school children in broad daylight, killings and sacking of entire communities across the country, arguments have become rife that even the sustained clamour for establishment of state police may not be the solution to terrorism in Nigeria.
Rather, there should be a complete overhaul of the nation’s security apparatuses in such a way that even threats of banditry could be nipped in the bud before they materialize. To the proponents of state police, who argue that community folks know their domains and could be the solution to terrorism in the country, a question that comes to mind is: If with all the federal might, government at the centre has not been able to contain banditry in over two decades, what is the guarantee that state police would do the magic of completely eradicating terrorism in no time?
And so, our stand remains that the Federal Government must deploy every foolproof measure to combat and completely annihilate any form of terrorism in the country, even if it means seeking assistance from the international community. Enough of bandits and terrorists holding Nigeria to ransom!
As a responsible news medium committed to telling truth to power, we are convinced that successive governments and even the incumbent administration have not done enough to frontally deal with terrorism, banditry, herdsmen menace haunting the country for over two decades.
A first attempt at confronting the issue would be to name names and investigate persons who have been indicted for sponsorship of terrorism, an ‘industry’ that has been estimated at trillions of Naira in terms of ransom takings! But state police or not, the challenges will continue to linger until concrete steps are taken at all levels.
That said, as the year 2025 winds down, we serve you our last edition for the year titled: State Police Not Solution to Terrorism and spiced up with stories from across the country, including the much awaited defection of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, secret files of the death of Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrujakpor, who died in mysterious circumstances on Thursday, December 11, 2025.
