Nigeria is on fire. It is not just an ordinary fire. It is the fire of politics, insecurity and the failure of government on all fronts. In our last edition, we published a whole dissertation by Mike Arnold, who insisted in his write up that insecurity persists in Nigeria because the political elite are complicit.
While we insist that in spite of all the information available to the fact that bandits and terrorists run amok because they have the backing of powerful elements in the corridors of power (who are obviously benefitting from the largesse of their trade), very little or nothing has been achieved in taming the insecurity monster that had plagued the country in over two decades.
And, as the fire rages, the presidency seems more interested in the politics of 2027 as we see in the attack on former Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, in Edo State under the watch of Governor Monday Okpebholo, who has been a forerunner in the effort to reelect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 even to the detriment of some Nigerians. So, we ask: Who masterminded the assassination attempt on Obi in Benin City?
Also, we observe that certain Nigerians have expressed reservations that in spite of United States President Donald Trump’s intervention in Nigeria’s insecurity challenge that culminated in a bomb attack in Borno State on December 25, 2025, not much has been achieved in taming terrorism and banditry across Nigeria. If anything, the situation has only become worse and this is reflected in a lead story titled: Insecurity Bites Harder Despite United States’ Intervention, as the scale of attacks escalate from the core North to parts of Kwara, Kogi, Ondo states and other parts of the country.
A major challenge, however, is that as 2027 inches closer, the opposition continues to be depleted in a flurry of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the last being Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State seen by most Nigerians as an attempt to achieve a one-party state, which is why we yet again ask: Can the Opposition Contain This Monster?
As the nation contends with escalating terrorism and systemic failure of security apparatuses, the presidency sacked former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun in a veiled resignation believed to have been orchestrated by powerful interests in government and swiftly replaced him with Olatunji Disu, who was due for retirement in hours, fuelling speculations that 2027 politics is at the core of the recent development.
Anyhow it turns out, we know that no system lasts forever because history records that even the strongest and most powerful kingdoms fell when the time was right.
