The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) pledges commitment to maritime decarbonization in Nigeria

In its pursuance of the International Maritime Organization (IMO’s) GreenVoyage2050 Project, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has reaffirmed its commitment to spearhead Nigeria’s transition toward maritime decarbonization through the development of a National Action Plan.
Speaking at the National Stakeholders’ Workshop on the Action Plan, NIMASA Director General Dr. Dayo Mobereola who was represented by Executive Director in charge of Operations, Engr. Fatai Taiye Adeyemi, described the workshop as a pivotal step in advancing the Federal Government’s blue economy and climate objectives.
The NIMASA helmsman hinted that the plan would be tailored to Nigeria’s realities, leveraging existing capacities, addressing gaps, and aligning with broader economic and environmental priorities. Mobereola said, “This transition is not merely about compliance with international obligations; it is about safeguarding our marine environment, protecting public health, strengthening the blue economy, and ensuring that our maritime industry remains competitive and future-ready.”
On the global context, Astrid Dispert, Technical Manager of the IMO Green Voyage 2050 Project, stressed that the initiative sought to establish a coherent, globally aligned regulatory framework to accelerate maritime decarbonization. She underscored NIMASA’s central role in driving the project at the national level.
The GreenVoyage2050 Project provides technical expertise and institutional support to help countries craft and implement National Action Plans that promote sustainable shipping, encourage investment in clean technologies, and build long-term capacity for emissions reduction.
Through this collaboration, Nigeria is taking deliberate steps toward maritime decarbonization commitment to global climate goals while ensuring a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for its maritime sector.
