It is said that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has proved that saying right beyond every reasonable doubt in the three years of his administration, thereby setting a very dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy.
Under his administration, there is nothing for the opposition-it is a game of the winner takes all. Under his watch, there is a complete negation of 18th century French philosopher, Montesquieu’s notion of separation of powers where the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary function independently of the other to act as effective checks and balances to avoid the abuse of power.
President Tinubu has all level of government in his firm grip. His style of governance defies all known democratic tenets. For the first time in the history of the country, over 90 percent of governors in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
As things stand, 31 governors are now solid members of the APC and the few left, it is learnt are being pressured to come over to the ruling party, to as they put it, align with the government at the federal level and reap all the benefits. It has been alleged that each governor that defected to APC got N250 billion.
As 2027 inches closer, Nigerians are not sure of the next move of the remaining governors in the opposition parties, mainly PDP’s Bauchi Governor, Bala Mohammed, Abia State Governor, Alex Oti of the Labour Party and Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, whose body language and alignments speak volumes of someone who wears the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) toga in the day time, but frolics with the President and his administration at night.
It is also disturbing that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, the only other governor still standing with the PDP, apart from Mohammed, cannot be trusted to remain in the party for too long, giving the kind of pressure in the country’s political firmament just as Ademola Adeleke, who used to be a staunch member of PDP had pitched his tent with the Accord Party (AP).
Well, the only way to get out of this quagmire is to keep pushing and praying until something positive happens and that positive event rests with the Nigerian electorate, who must decide who decides the future in the 2027 general elections.
