A detailed account of Reverend sister Maureen Wecheonwu’s controversial life style and brutal murder
Her life was full of mysteries if you say she is controversy personified you are not far from the truth. Most of her steps and moves were shrouded in secrecy and questionable. Report had it that Rev. Sis. Maureen Wecheonwu claimed to be among a congregation of Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters in Nigeria. Although, she is from Rivers State, nobody can ascertain which particular community or town she hails from, she ran an Orphanage Home and a clinic under the auspices of Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters at Aluu, a suburb of Port Harcourt.
But the Port Harcourt Diocese of Roman Catholic Church was quick to disown her as a Reverend Sister. Sources from the Diocese disclosed to Tentacle that Maureen Wecheonwu contrary to her claims, is not a nun of a Roman Catholic Church nor her congregation known to the church. The church warned that any person doing business with her as a nun is doing so at his or her own peril. The church further warned that it has nothing to do with her vocation and other secular activities.
Tentacle further gathered that the clinic was operating under the congregation of Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters in Nigeria was sub standard. Most of her medical personnel were not well-trained and more disturbing was that she sourced her drugs from unauthorized merchants whose stock in trade is to sell fake and adulterated drugs to unsuspecting general public.
But despite criticism, scandal and gossip running after her, her vocation and clinic were thriving. A devout Catholic and a Parishioner of St. James Eneka, Port Harcourt, Mr. Rex Briggs told Tentacle that most of the parishioners patronized her clinic. He admitted that while some were healed and cured of their sickness, some of them lost their lives in the hospital.
Another worshipper at St. James Eneka, Mrs. Rose Ekwuru from Imo State narrated her own side of the story to Tentacle in a positive note. According to her, after staying for months at University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, (UPTH) without any sign of healing or improvement in her life threatening sickness, she was rushed to her clinic where she was miraculously cured of the sickness that has been disturbing her for years. “I can say for others, if not for her clinic, I would not have been alive today, to God be the glory” she said. She further said that she cannot say whether Rev. Sis. Maureen is fake or real. According to her judgment is for God and not human beings.
Mrs. Ekwuru agreed that some of her church members lost their lives in the hospital that does not mean that the medical centre is a death centre. To her, even in the best hospitals in the world, deaths are also recorded there. She advised the management of the hospital to upgrade with the present realities.
For back in 2022, the controversial Nun, Maureen Wecheonwu, Tentacle further gathered was arrested and paraded by Rives State Police Command for alleged children trafficking at the State Police Headquarters, at Moscow Road, Port Harcourt. Although, she denied be involved or having anything to do with children theft or trafficking those arrested with her confessed that she is a partner in crime. According to them, Maureen bought the children between N50 to N100 thousand per child.
The sources further said that she re-sell the children at a very high price to either those that what to adopt children or those that want them for ritual purposes. On how she operates, our dependable source further revealed that her network lures young children from mostly Imo State, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, Delta and Edo States.
Then house them in the guise of a num running an Orphanage Home. Another source who pleaded anonymity told Tentacle that Rev. Sis. Maureen received a lot of donations both in cash and materials from religions body, organizations, people of good will both home and abroad in addition to selling children which was her main illicit hustle.
The source further said that although she was detained for long by the police, but as we all know our Nigeria system, she found a way to buy her freedom. “A child trafficker found her way back into society”.
Continuing the source said her freedom was short lived as the blood of innocent children she sold to ritualists came for a revenge, as she met her own death in a violent manner.
According to reports one Kelvin Okoro was said to be owing the nun an undisclosed sum for years and had been under pressure from her to repay the debt. Perhaps wanting to put an end to her constant harassment and disturbs, reportedly lured her to a secluded area under the guise of settling the matter. Instead, he did the worst by allegedly attacked her with a blunt and sharp object and took her belonging and left her dead in cold blood.
Tentacle learnt that Kelvin Okoro motive for the crime was reportedly linked to a significant debt he was unable to repay. In a misguided attempt to escape his financial burdens, he allegedly committed the atrocity, believing that killing the Reverend Sister would free him from his troubles.
Her lifeless body was later discovered in a pool of blood by locals who promptly alerted the Aluu community security group. The suspicion quickly feel on Kelvin who had gone into hiding. The Local Vigilante group, OSPAC led by Commander Kingsley Wali who is also Chief Security Officer of the Community (CSO) acting on intelligence, tracked down Kelvin in his hideout and handed him over to the police. The spokesperson for Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe Koko who is also a Superintendent of Police (SP) confirmed the incident.
“Yes, I can confirm the arrest of the suspect. The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju has directed the transfer of the suspect and case file to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Port Harcourt for discreet investigation” SP Koko said.
Meanwhile mixed reaction is thrilling the brutal killing of the Nun in a cold blood. While some without mincing words said that she deserved what she got because according to them while she was alive she was no respect for sanity of life. “How can one have pity on a woman who sold hundreds of innocent children to ritualists who murdered them for money-making” one thundered.
Others condemned the dastard and heinous act in strong term by saying that no matter her weakness as a human being, she does not deserve the painful and cruel death on the hand of someone she so much helped in life. They called for immediate prosecution of her killer in the law court by the police.
