The Nigerian Sea Ports Authority Police calls for public support to strengthen terminal safety
The Ports Authority Police, Western Command, has urged stakeholders and frequent users of Nigeria’s seaports to take a more active role in ensuring the safety and security of terminal operations, describing it as a matter of national interest.
Speaking in Lagos recently, the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Isaac Hundeyin, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) highlighted the benefits of safe and secure terminal activities, saying that they form the backbone of the country’s maritime trade ecosystem.
“Nigeria’s seaports are dynamic hubs of global trade and local logistics. Ensuring safety in these terminals protects lives, cargo, and investments while sustaining Nigeria’s reputation in international commerce,” Hundeyin said.
Seaport terminals, where cargo is loaded, unloaded, and processed, handle diverse goods ranging from containers and bulk cargo to hazardous materials and vehicles. According to the Ports Authority Police, strict adherence to safety protocols is critical to preventing accidents, theft, and disruptions.
The Command highlighted key areas of focus, including access control, cargo handling, traffic regulation, fire safety, surveillance, and environmental compliance. Its officers also conduct routine patrols, investigate cargo-related crimes, and collaborate with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to maintain order.
The Command’s PRO, Hundeyin, appealed to truck drivers, clearing agents, dockworkers, and seafarers to observe safety rules such as carrying valid identification, avoiding restricted areas, reporting suspicious activity, and wearing protective gear.
He said, “Safety is a shared responsibility, when everyone plays their part, terminals can serve not only as centers of trade and economic growth but also as models of discipline and security.”
Reaffirming its commitment, the Ports Authority Police pledged to strengthen security at Nigeria’s maritime gateways as part of broader efforts to support economic stability and modernization in the sector.
