In another major onslaught against illicit drugs importation, Customs Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘C’ Owerri intercepts and hands over N2.64 billion worth of Tramadol, other prohibited and highly controlled substances to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)

The Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘C’, Owerri of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Imo State, has intercepted and handed over prohibited and illicit drugs valued at over N2. 64 billion to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further necessary action.
This was disclosed in a statement by the unit’s spoke person Chief Superintendent of Customs (CPRO) R. Nche and made available to Tentacle Magazine.
Area Controller of the Unit, Comptroller Bishir Abdullahi Balogun handed over the seized and unregistered controlled substances and other illicit drugs, which includes 1,126,060 tablets of Tramadol, 21,245 bottles of Barcadin Codeine Syrup, 666 sacks and 19 wraps of Cannabis Sativa, three wraps of Scottish Loud, 11 wraps of Ghanaian Loud, five wraps of Colos, alongside other illicit substances.
Speaking during the official handover ceremony in Owerri on Thursday, April 25, 2026, Comptroller, Balogun said, the items were intercepted through a strategic credible intelligence deployment, diligent surveillance and a high level of professionalism of Customs officers, who remain resolute in the discharge of their statutory responsibilities.
In line with the Comptroller General Of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi’s policy thrust on consolidation, collaboration and innovation, the units breakthrough in anti-smuggling activities is largely dependent on teamwork and effective collaborative engagement with other sister agencies to achieve a common national goal.
As we all know, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency as the lead agency in drug control and enforcement, plays a critical role in ensuring that these seized items are kept out of unregulated circulation.
He said the misuse and illegal distribution of Tramadol, Codeine based syrups and Cannabis Sativa have continued to pose serious threats to public health, particularly among the youth and National Security.
“These substance when misuse, when abused, contribute to addiction, high-profile criminal activities and social instability. As a service, we recognise the grave implications and remain fully committed to combating this menace at all levels. Today’s event underscores the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in safeguarding our nation from the dangers posed by illicit drugs and highly controlled substances,” he said.
He stressed that the seizure represented another major breakthrough in the unit’s anti-smuggling operations and strong teamwork and effective collaboration with the NDLEA and other sister agencies in pursuit of a common national goal.
“This handover, therefore, is not just a procedural exercise; it is a demonstration of strong inter-agency synergy and a shared resolve to rid our society of harmful, highly controlled drugs and illicit substances. It also sends a clear message to those involved in illicit drug trafficking that their activities will not go unchecked,” he added.
Balogun also commended the officers and men of the Unit for their vigilance, integrity and commitment in sustaining pressure on smugglers, while also applauding the NDLEA and other security agencies for their continued cooperation in securing the country.
He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting law enforcement agencies by providing timely and useful information. The seized items were received on behalf of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) by the Deputy Zonal Commander, DC Bani MacLean Monday.
