Role Of Public Servants In Nigeria’s Malady
The ruiners of Nigeria’s economic and political systems are the so-called civil servants. In public administration, civil servants are what experts refer to as the stabilizing force. Politicians and their governments come and go, but it is the stabilizing force that holds the system and ensures the it is afloat despite which political party that is in charge.
In Nigeria, civil servants are an aberration because they play the role of sycophants to the ruling authority. That is why in this part of the world, uniformed operatives like the police, customs, immigration and their likes serve and protect those in authority, but abuse the citizens whom they are supposed to protect. In this manner, the leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is displaying the sycophancy approach to serving the incumbent government. Hence, it is plotting to stay in authority as long as the government permits it, without due regard to the civil service rules of retirement when it is due.
In our Cover Story in this edition, we bring you the ugly tales of how the management of the NCS is plotting to destroy the Civil Service rule to remain perpetual in office despite President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive that officers who have served out their years of service either by having spent 36 years in service or attained 6o years of age, should retire.
Will the Wale Adeniyi-led management team of the NCS accept to retire and leave the new-generation officers to take over the leadership of the NCS at the national level, as directed by President Tinubu?
This is the Cover Story we bring to our esteemed readers this week, not forgetting our regulars. Enjoy it.
