With the successful conduct of the Saturday, August 15, 2026 Osun State off-cycle gubernatorial election in which the Accord Party candidate, Ademola Adeleke emerged victorious, some Nigerians are beginning to reason that Nigeria can indeed achieve credible, free and fair election.
There have been several arguments on the outcome of the election, with some reasoning that money played a pivotal role in deciding the winner. Some argued that while the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) deployed over 276 high profile politicians and government officials including 17 sitting governors and large number of National Assembly members, a staggering N110 billion was alleged to have been wasted by the APC and Accord Party to ensure that either of the parties won the contest at all cost.
As the 2027 general elections draw nearer, there are divided opinions on the best candidate to win the presidential poll among incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and candidate of the African Democratic Party (ADC), and their counterpart in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Peter Gregory Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State.
Giving the political permutations following the outcome of the Osun election, Nigerians are asking-will the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deliver the same veracity and authenticity with which it delivered the Osun experience? Most Nigerians think it may not be possible giving the fact that the incumbent occupier of the seat may and will not likely concede defeat even in clear case of another candidate coasting home to victory. Reason being that INEC may be constrained to deploy a usual tactic of election rigging-glitches in the iReV collating and computing room.
That brings us to the pressing issue of the day-the question of Osun election being apart-how the electoral umpire will ensure that the best candidates emerge victorious in the upcoming 2027 general elections across all strata of government.
