Rejected By Electorate

This is no time to pontificate. It is both a known fact and reality that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu may have been rejected by the electorate ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Tinubu’s decision not to campaign round the country may not necessarily have to do with his old age or frail looks.

But because over and above everything else, there is so much angst in the country as Nigerians have had to endure economic hardship, insecurity, kidnappings, terrorism, banditry and severe hunger due to his administration’s hasty removal of fuel subsidy, floating of the Naira and other unfriendly policies since May 29, 2023.

With all the presidential handlers’ claims of a growing economy by over 4.2 percent and all the vaunting of macro-economic excellence in the last three years, infrastructure development with the promotion of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway having been renamed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, little or no respite has being felt by the struggling, resilient and cheerful citizens, who in the late Fela Anikulapo’s words, keep “suffering and smiling.”

Consequently, as things stand, if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the courts really want to defend the country’s democracy, chances are very slim that President Tinubu would secure a second term in office. However, whether the INEC or the courts accept to support democracy or not and do the needful, angry citizens are already threatening that no amount of force or intimidation by security forces would deter them from watching over, and protecting their votes, indicating that any act on the part of INEC to rig the election will set the country ablaze.

In the North especially, there are protestations by the youths who adorn T-Shirts with inscription, Tinubu Must Go, just as some youths in the Niger Delta during a rally, particularly in Warri, Delta State rejected polo shirts in which the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda was embossed.

And as the presidential campaigns commence across the country, the topmost contenders against President Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and his Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) counterpart, Peter Gregory Obi, have pledged to campaign in the 36 states of the country and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, but the incumbent has promised to campaign in only 12 states obviously due to incapacity and health issues.
