Pastor Nabbed Over Murder

A young pastor lands in police net over an alleged ritual murder in Okaka Community of Bayelsa State

By Chinedu Oguh, Port Harcourt

In Okaka, Bayelsa State, a routine debt collection turned into a terrifying discovery that left an entire community stunned as Catherine, a hardworking young woman who made a living selling men’s and women’s clothing, was murdered. Among her customers was Joseph, a young man who was also a youth pastor at Christ Embassy — the same church Catherine attended.

Tentacle gathered because they shared the same faith and knew each other personally, Catherine trusted him enough to sell him clothes on credit. For some time Catherine waited patiently for him to pay, then she decided it was time to collect her money.

According to Tentacle source, before leaving home, she reportedly told her mother where she was going: she headed to Joseph’s residence expecting nothing more than a quick conversation and the settlement of an unpaid debt. But Catherine never returned.

Said the source, as the hours passed, her family became increasingly worried. Night eventually fell, but there was still no sign of her; her phone rang again and again, but nobody answered.

The following morning, Catherine’s mother, who had gone to Joseph’s residence desperate to know what had happened to her daughter, Joseph reportedly appeared calm.

According to reports, he told Catherine’s mother that Catherine had already visited him, collected her money and left, but something about his explanation did not sit right with her. She refused to leave, standing outside the apartment, she repeatedly called Catherine’s phone and shouted her daughter’s name.

Then, came evidence that something was terribly wrong; she heard her phone ringing inside Catherine was nowhere to be found.

But near the entrance, the reports added, her mother noticed something that immediately raised suspicion. A patch of ground looked freshly disturbed; heartbroken, she screamed and neighbors rushed toward the apartment.

Young men from the area began digging into the suspicious patch of earth, and within moments, their worst fears were confirmed. They uncovered Catherine’s lifeless body in a shallow grave inside the apartment. Blood was reportedly visible around her face. The discovery sent shock waves through the neighborhood.

Overcome with grief and anger, Catherine’s mother confronted Joseph and dragged him outside, demanding justice. Before the situation could escalate into mob action violence, Tentacle gathered that police officers were called to the scene and who took Joseph into custody.

What remains especially disturbing is the question of what really happened inside that apartment? Was the ₦50,000 debt truly the reason Catherine met her end? Did an argument or confrontation occur? Or was she lured into the residence? Was the unpaid money simply the reason for a proper investigation, and the source can only be answered by a proper investigation and the evidence gathered by authorities?

For Catherine’s family, however, one fact remains painful: she left home expecting to collect money from someone she trusted, and she never returned.

As the news of the discovery spread, rumors quickly began to spread, with some people alleging that the killing was connected to ritual activity.

The case serves as a devastating reminder that danger can sometimes hide behind familiar faces and that trust should never be mistaken for safety.

Many are saying that these killings by young men on innocent women is fast becoming. The women who men are supposed to protect, are now turning around killing them. More reason women don’t trust men anymore.

Precious Grace in her reaction said, “You see most of the brothers and sisters in church, I personally fear them more than anything. The wickedness in their hearts and the worst of it all not known because they pray like heaven wants to fall, but if you go closely to them you will understand,” said Precious Grace.
